Aetna CEO Says Obamacare In “Death Spiral” While Company Financially Supports ACA Advocates

Conservatives probably agree with Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini who recently told the Wall Street Journal that Obamacare is in a “death spiral.” Insurers like Aetna are finding that participation in the public exchanges established by the law is increasingly untenable from a business perspective due to rising costs. It seems that the whole scheme could be on the verge of collapse under its own weight.

Incredibly, Aetna is also funding the organizations lobbying to keep the entire system in place.

Our research shows that Aetna funds the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Planned Parenthood, Susan G. Komen, and the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC), all of which have records of supporting Obamacare and its implementation:

  • HRC, which believes insurance that does not pay for an individual’s elective gender transition amounts to “discrimination,” recently published seven reasons to keep Obamacare intact for the “LGBT community.”
  • Planned Parenthood regularly spreads misleading claims that repealing Obamacare would “deny healthcare” to individuals.
  • Susan G. Komen praised the 2012 Supreme Court ruling that upheld Obamacare saying it “preserves provisions that Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has supported for many years.”
  • The USHCC called for Medicaid expansion under Obamacare in its latest Legislative Agenda publication.

Bloomberg is reporting that Aetna has “cut its footprint to four states for this year, from 15, after losing about $450 million on sales of ACA plans last year.” Perhaps, Bertolini could help his company mitigate those losses by ceasing to fund the advocacy organizations that are fighting to keep these financially disastrous policies in place.
