Business in Focus – Olympic Edition for NBCUniversal

2nd Vote takes a 2nd Look at NBCUniversal, who will be broadcasting the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics on their family of networks.

NBCUniversal has paid $775 million for the rights to broadcast the 2014 Winter Olympics on their family of networks over the next two weeks. They plan to air 539 hours of coverage from Sochi and air over 11,000 30-second commercials.  A recent AdWeek report stated that those commercials are estimated to bring in over $1 billion in revenue to NBCUniversal which has broadcast the Olympics since the 1984 summer games in Los Angeles, CA, and will continue to do so through the 2020 Olympics.

As of 2013, Comcast decided it would not accept new advertising for firearms or weapons. The Comcast Foundation supports the National Urban league and the YWCA, both members of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. According to the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, “The insurrectionist ideology promoted by the NRA and other pro-gun groups is corrosive to the democratic values and institutions that protect the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.”

NBCUniversal partners with the Nature Conservancy, an organization that supports cap-and-trade legislation.

Marriage – 2

NBCUniversal is a corporate sponsor of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center. Comcast is listed as a corporate supporter of GLAAD, an organization that advocates for same-sex marriage. Comcast was also a corporate sponsor of the GLAAD media awards. Comcast supports and is a corporate partner of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Foundation, which “provides research and policy analysis” to “counter right-wing lies.” Comcast received a 100 score on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2014 “Buyer’s Guide.” Comcast was a gold level sponsor of the HRC’s 2013 National Dinner.

The Comcast Foundation has given to Girls Inc., and organization that supports abortion. The Comcast Foundation has also give to United Way, which has funded Planned Parenthood Programs.

CEO Activism

The Chairman and CEO of Comcast is Brian L. Roberts.  Since 1997, Brian Roberts have given 76% or $199, 800 of his political contributions to Democrat candidates or committees. His biggest recipient has been Hillary Clinton totaling $12,900, $8,300 to her Senate campaign and $4,600 to presidential campaign in 2008. Roberts has also given to $80,000 to the Comcast PAC.

Corporate PAC

During the 2014 election cycle, the Comcast PAC has given equally to both Republicans and Democrats.  In total, they have given $425,500 to Democrat candidates and $420,000 to Republican candidates this cycle.
